The Redemptorists were people with great missionary zeal. Like St. Clement they went all around the world preaching the word of God. They were people with full of zeal and Spirit. The Irish Redemptorists came to Sri Lanka in 1939 and to India in 1940. The first foundation was started in Bangalore in 1940.
The first Redemptorist foundation in the Syro-Malabar Church was started in 1981 at Chowara, near Alwaye. A separate Unit for the Redemptorists who belong to the Syro-Malabar Church was a felt need. Thus the Region of Alwaye was formed and it was inaugurated on February 19, 1992. The General Government raised the Region to the status of an autonomous Vice-Province and it was inaugurated on July 3, 1995. The Vice-Province of Alwaye became a province called the Liguori Province with Liguori Bhavan, Mattoor as its headquarters and was inaugurated on June 27, 2008. The Liguori province has 8 canonically erected communities. They are: Nitya Sahaya Bhavan, Chowara; Alphonse Bhavan, Edoor; Santhome Minor Seminary, Podimattam; St. Clement’s Study House, Vadavathoor; St. Gerard’s Monastery, Karavaloor; St. John Neumann Bhavan, Kunnambetta; and Amala Estate, Vadakkancherry. It has 57 priests and 43 professed students. The main apostolate of the Province is the explicit proclamation of the Word of God through parish missions, retreats to religious and priests, and youth retreats.
